At MaudCare, we believe meaningful support starts with understanding each person’s interests, strengths and goals. Whether it is building confidence, developing skills or creating opportunities for self-expression, our peer mentors support participants in a way that is practical, encouraging and person-centred.
For Vicki, art has always been a big part of who she is. She has been painting since she was two years old and creativity has continued to be something that brings her calm, comfort and joy throughout her life. Art gives Vicki the opportunity to express herself in a way that feels natural, meaningful and personal to her.
When asked what she loves about art, Vicki shared:
“Art relaxes my mind. It is calming and makes you forget about stuff.”
Vicki enjoys both painting and drawing. For her, art is more than just an activity. It gives her a positive way to focus, feel relaxed and take pride in what she creates. Through art, Vicki is able to use her imagination, make choices and continue building confidence in her own creative style.

Vicki also loves creating canvases for participants and peer mentors, with many people requesting artwork from her because they appreciate her creativity and the care she puts into each piece. For Vicki, this is a special way to share something she loves with others, while also building confidence and pride in her creative abilities.
Vicki’s passion for art has also been part of her working life. She previously worked at Nelson Primary School as a teacher’s aide in an art class, supporting students from Prep to Year 4. In this role, Vicki helped students with painting, set up tables, organised books and encouraged children as they worked on their creative activities.
This experience gave Vicki the chance to share something she loves with others. Supporting children in the art room allowed her to help students feel confident, try new things and enjoy being creative. It also gave Vicki the opportunity to be part of a classroom environment where encouragement, patience and creativity were important every day.
Through this role, Vicki built important skills including patience, creativity, communication, helping others and setting up activities. She is also proud to have completed her Certificate III in Education Support, which reflects her dedication to learning and supporting children in a classroom environment.

A special connection has continued through MaudCare, with another participant, Tristan, having been one of the students Vicki supported during her time at Nelson Primary School. When asked about having Vicki as his art teacher, Tristan shared that he enjoyed being taught by her.
For Vicki, this is something to be proud of. Her creativity has not only supported her own wellbeing but has also allowed her to encourage, teach and support others in a meaningful way.
When asked if she would like to continue doing art in the future, Vicki said:
“Yes, it’s a part of me.”
Vicki’s story is a beautiful reminder of how creativity can build confidence, connection, independence and purpose. We are proud to support Vicki as she continues to explore her love of art, celebrate her strengths and share her creativity with those around her.
